Built-Up System / Air Handling Unit

Air Handling Unit

The air handling unit conditions and supplies air to the air distribution system. Conditioning includes heating, cooling, filtration, humidification and dehumidification. The air handling unit is mostly used in a built-up system. It can be located on a rooftop (pictured) or inside.

Outside Air Damper: The outside air damper regulates the quantity of outside air entering the unit at a given time.

Return Air Damper: The return air damper regulates the quantity of inside air entering the unit at a given time.

Filter: A filter cleans the air before it enters the distribution system.

Cooling Coil: The cooling coil transfers heat from the air to the cooling medium.

Heating Coil/Element (not pictured): The heating coil transfers heat from the heating medium to the air.

Motor: The motor rotates the fan via the belt drive or direct drive.

Fan: The fan pushes air through the cooling and/or heating coils to the distribution system.

Controls: Safety and temperature controls properly operate the unit.
